Space Discovery: Christa Lee
Welcome to our new Space Discovery!
Today we present you Christa Lee and her very first single, “Love Potion”. From Middleton, Wisconsin, Christa has been singing since a young age, drawing inspiration from jazz, pop, R&B and indie. Love Potion is clearly the product of all these – such a retro yet fresh song that will appeal to both the nostalgic of older musical eras and the ever-evolving TikTok generation.
The warm, groovy bassline and Christa Lee’s soulful, high-pitched voice take us into her dream world, where she convinces herself to be under a spell to resist the idea that she’s fallen in love. “Make me blush, what’s the rush? / Love potion, is it too much? / Love potion in my veins / rush through me like a tidal wave”, she sings, the rhythmic flow and catchy rhymes instantly becoming memorable and compelling you to at least hum along.
The clever use of layered harmonies and well-placed backing vocals adds depth and texture to the overall sound. It all results into a hooky melody with background voices echoing Christa’s which create an atmosphere of ecstatic love, of a trance-like state where everything around seems a bit unreal, but not in a psychedelic way. We’re living a teenage dream but, unlike Katy Perry’s, this is sweeter and more innocent, more shocking, with forgotten feelings creeping over unexpectedly.
“Love Potion” comes with all the charming freshness of a debut song and the versatility of a production made of 1980s, 2010s and 2020s elements and sounds, ending up being both contemporary and timeless. Not only its sounds, but the song’s universal themes of love, desire and the following sense of dizziness resonate with listeners of all ages. The relatable lyrics, combined with Christa‘s heartfelt delivery, create an emotional connection that is hard to resist. Whether you’re reminiscing about past love, experiencing or yearning for a new one, “Love Potion” encapsulates those feelings with an undeniable charm.
