Space Discovery: DrewKaboom
Welcome to our new Space Discovery!
I said it in one of my last reviews, and here I can confirm: it’s the era of spiritual dragons coming alive in hip-hop and boom bap music, and do we love it!
Today we fly to New York to meet Andrew E. Campbell, aka DrewKaboom, a shamanic sound healer, emcee and audio professional who works with sound therapy and takes on the name of Epoch for his masked rapper persona.
EPOCH: BBBZZZZ is a psychedelic rap track that takes you on a trip of spiritual affirmation with the feisty sharpness of rap and the dreamlike feel of psychedelic music. The bassline is still heavy and hard-hitting, but you can hear twinkling beneath the drum, which remind me of the healing sounds and vibrations DrewKaboom is a master of, accompanied by howling wolves and glitchy distortions here and there.
This kind of hip-hop no longer represents the aggressiveness of street life but that of spiritual awakening. If I was to describe it with an image, it would be that of a dragon meditating, and the lyrics would be their stream of consciousness. DrewKaboom, indeed, professes to be covering “the meaning of the dragon being reborn within you”, and he does this expertly by coupling powerful lyrics with new sounds that combine meditative melodies with more aggressive saw pads, synths and bass.
From the wobbly entrance, this track lures you in and will have you listen to it multiple times in a row just to pick up on new unheard sounds and elements of its polyrhythm each time. The different rhythms playing in the track are so cohesive and well blended that you won’t notice at first, believing it’s one, so its polyhedric nature will strike you, but then your ears will start picking up on all the different elements of this great production, making you appreciate it even more.
DrewKaboom can make magic happen with his music, be it Tibetan bowls and healing sounds or rap bars and potent beats.

Welcome to Space, Drewkaboom!
What’s the story behind your latest release?
BBBZZZZ is an enigmatic amalgamation of hip-hop and metaphysics. Using a unique yet familiar style to convey my understanding of the world we live in whilst praising artists and friends that influenced my style. I wear a three faced mask when I rap bc of symbolism of the 3.
What are your plans for the future?
As a shamanic sound therapist as well as emcee/rapper my plans are to release more meditation music along with more hip-hop tracks, albums, etc. Working with the same artists who helped get me to where I am is also been a huge motivator in getting even more work out. And there’s always more ways to be creative and my goal is to explore that.
If you had a time machine, in which era would you travel and which kind of music would you bring with you in the past?
Anytime in Meso-America before the Inquistions.
90’s & early 00’s East Coast Hip-Hop
